A Message of Gratitude to the People of Cyprus

Over the past week, Cyprus has once again shown its remarkable heart and humanity.

In the wake of unexpected and escalating events, thousands of Israelis found themselves stranded in Cyprus, arriving with uncertainty, anxiety, and little more than a suitcase. As in the past—when Cyprus served as a place of refuge for Holocaust survivors detained on its shores after World War II—the Cypriot people have once again stood on the side of compassion and care.
On behalf of the Jewish community and the Israeli people, I extend our deepest and most heartfelt thanks to the people of Cyprus, to the staff at Hermes Airports, and to all those working tirelessly at the seaports of Limassol and Larnaca. Your responsiveness, professionalism, and kindness have brought comfort and dignity to so many in a moment of real need.
We also pay tribute to the historical legacy of Christakis Papavasiliou and the many Cypriots who, in the darkest days after the Holocaust, offered shelter and support to Jewish survivors detained in British camps. That same spirit of solidarity is alive today.
Finally, I extend my profound appreciation to the Jewish Community of Cyprus—individuals and families who opened their homes, kitchens, and hearts to ensure that no one was left alone. From providing warm meals to arranging accommodations and emotional support, your actions are a source of pride and blessing.
This moment has reminded us of all of what it means to be part of a greater human family—one defined by compassion, shared responsibility, and hope.
Thank you, Cyprus, for standing with us once again.
With sincere gratitude,

Rabbi Arie Zeev Raskin
Chief Rabbi of Cyprus
